Hoendertande Grenache comes from the extremely sought-after Piekenierskloof appellation and like the “Ou Treffer Cinsault”, only 1 barrel was produced. Also referred to as the “abalone” of the valley, sought-after, treasured… as scarce as hens’ teeth.
VINTAGE NOTES
These Piekenierskloof grapes were planted in the early 2000’s. The famous tractor driver, also known as “Panda” (you’ll find him featuring on the wrapping paper) collected these grapes and transported them to the cellar.
WINEMAKING
Whole-bunch fermentation in open-top fermenters with 2 punch downs daily for 10 days. After being basket pressed, the wine was barrel aged in an older 500l French Oak barrel for 12 months.
TASTING NOTE
Red cherry and strawberry notes plus a subtle earthy note on the nose. Light-bodied with lovely pure fruit, fresh acidity and very fine tannins. A slightly spicy quality to the finish thanks to whole-bunch fermentation.
